There are three ways to mark the main parameters of capacitor: direct mark, digital mark and color mark.
1. Direct Mark
Electrolytic capacitor or non-polar capacitor with large volume: nominal capacitance, rated voltage and capacitance tolerance.
Non polar capacitor with small volume: nominal capacitance, rated voltage and capacitance tolerance.
Capacitance unit: μF, nF, pF
Eg: 1p2 means 1.2pF
1n means 1,000pF
10n means 0.01μF
2u2 means 2.2μF
Simple method (not remark capacitance unit):9999≥significant number≥1, capacitance unit is pF, significant number<1,capacitance unit is μF
Eg: 1.2,10,100,1000,3300,6800... capacitance unit is pF
0.1,0.22,0.47,0.022/0.047...capacitance unit is μF
Capacitance Tolerance:
Ordinary capacitors: ±5%(Ⅰ,J), ±10%(Ⅱ,K), ±20%(Ⅲ,M)
Precision capacitors: ±2%(G), ±1%(F), ±0.5%(D), ±0.25%(C), ±0.1%(B), ±0.05%(W)
Rated voltage: 6.3V, 10V, 16V, 25V, 32V, 50V, 63V, 100V, 160V, 250V, 400V, 450V, 500V, 630V, 1000V, 1200V, 1500V, 1600V, 1800V, 2000V...
2.Digital Mark
Digital mark calligraphy is generally three-dimensional digital of capacitor’s capacitance, with unit as pF. The first two digits are the significant digits of the capacitor, the third digit is the multiplier, but when the third multiplier is 9, it means x10-1.
Eg: 101 means 10X101=100pF
102 means 10X102=1,000pF
103 means 10X103=0.01μF
104 means 10X104=0.1μF
223 means 22X103=0.22μF
474 means 47X104=0.47μF
159 means 15X10-1=1.5pF
3.Color Mark
Mark the capacitor with color ring or color dot to indicate the capacitance and capacitance tolerance.
Four color ring marking method: the first and second ring represents the effective value, the third ring represents the multiplier, and the fourth ring represents the tolerance (ordinary capacitor).
Five color ring marking method: the first, second and third rings represent the effective value, the fourth ring represents the multiplier, and the fifth ring represents the tolerance (precision capacitor).
Eg: brown, black, orange, gold represent capacitor’s capacitance is 0.01μF and tolerance is ±5%.
brown, black, black, red, brown represent capacitor’s capacitance is 0.01μF and tolerance is ±1%.
